Podcast #80 – Closeup on Cab Franc

Cabernet Franc – a red grape that seems to befit BC’s (and Canada’s) climate more closely than other big reds. It needs a shorter growing season (check) with a some good heat (check) in order to show its full potential and power. To me it is the Darth Vader of grapes; dark fruits, complexity, and tannins can make some BC cab francs stand out as the true master of the dark side. Considering the power of some of the Cab Franc-dominated meritage blends (Painted Rock’s first vintage of Red Icon, Hester Creek’s The Judge) and the single variety versions from Tinhorn Creek, Fairview Cellars, and Burrowing Owl, Cab Franc is really the dark lord of BC wines.

Markets however have always tended to prefer the Luke Skywalker of grapes, Cabernet Sauvignon, which is ultimately more powerful, complex and more universal likeable than the genetic father Cab Franc. However, sometimes the true hero is the one you least expect it to be.

May the Franc be with you.
